Neil Welliver was an American artist known for his large-scale landscape paintings. Inspired by the deep woods near his home in Maine, the artist would make plein-air sketches after hiking into the woods with his equipment on his back. He’d recreate the sketches in oil on large canvases, often as large as 8 x 10 feet, unconventionally painting from the upper left-hand . His unfinished paintings confirm another methodical practice: every shape was circumscribed in pencil before color was added, the very model of the paint-by-number process.
